Top Things to Know
Both vouchers and home-delivery models may be viable PRx implementation strategies.
Behavioral supports can be successfully integrated alongside produce benefits.
Higher dropout rates among younger, lower-income, and less-educated participants underscore the need for targeted retention strategies to ensure equitable participation in FIM programs.
Summary of Conclusion/Findings
This pilot randomized trial compared produce vouchers with home-delivered produce boxes among 48 adults with overweight or obesity and nutrition insecurity. Retention was high (88%), satisfaction exceeded 90%, and produce redemption ranged from 75% to 99% across approaches. Participants demonstrated improvements in nutrition security, diet quality, fruit intake, self-efficacy, and systolic blood pressure. Both delivery strategies appeared feasible and acceptable in a community setting. As a pilot study, the trial was not powered to establish comparative effectiveness between delivery models.
